Using Today's Data to Evaluate Tomorrow's Systems

The DHS DETER Project and IMPACTInformation Marketplace for Policy and Analysis of Cyber-risk & Trust – both provide information and resources for systems evaluation. We are working towards integrating these two platforms to enable seamless experimentation of large scale and complex systems on DETERLab using one or more data sets from IMPACT.

Ethics & Privacy in Cyber Physical Systems presented by DETER's Dr. Alefiya Hussain at USC Symposium at DECIDE

Dr. Alefiya Hussain hosted a panel on Engineering Ethics at the USC Center for Interdisciplinary Decisions and Ethics (DECIDE) on October 28th. The panel was part of the Fall symposium on Next Generation Ethics and addressed some of the engineering ethical dilemmas we face today or will face in the near future with advances in various technologies in the area of cyber physical systems and the Internet of Things.

Interns Use DETERLab Tools To Model & Evaluate School To “Off Grid”

During the summer, Dr. Alefiya Hussain hosted seven high school students from Chadwick School to do a five-week internship at USC Information Sciences Institute (ISI). The internship focused on leveraging the experimentation tools in DETERLab to model and evaluate the process of making the Chadwick campus an energy sustainable environment.

The second GREPSEC workshop was recently held in San Jose, California, May 16-17, at The Sainte Claire Hotel. The event was very successful and included forty students from thirty universities. The day-and-a-half workshop preceded the annual IEEE S&P (Security and Privacy) Symposium.

NIST Cyber-Physical Systems Testbed Workshop

This week NIST held a workshop on Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) testbeds. While the development of CPS testbeds is still in the early stages, this workshop was presented as an opportunity to bring a diverse spectrum of the CPS and testbed communities together, to talk about key capabilities that CPS testbeds should have and the design principles that make them possible.

NASPI Association to Contribute to Understanding of How DeterLab can Support Research in Cyber-Physical Systems

I attended the 20th NASPI Working Group meeting in Knoxville, TN on March 11-12, 2014. The NASPI Working Group is a voluntary organization of electric power engineers, technical managers in power-related corporations, vendors of products supporting power transmission, and academics in the power field.

Israel Visit to Establish New Cyber Ecosystem Capability

Several key members of the DETER Project team – myself (Terry Benzel), Steve Schwab, and Ted Faber – traveled to Israel to work with the Israeli National Cyber Bureau (INCB) under a bi-lateral agreement between the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the INCB. Additionally, we took with us two DeterLab 'power users' from our DETER community – Sandy Clark, University of Pennsylvania and Ryan Goodfellow, Washington State University – to be a part of this exciting opportunity. NASPI Work Group Meeting

NASPI (North American SynchroPhasor Initiative) has been funding a large-scale deployment and application of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) in the electric power grid. This relatively small advance in technology is expected to lead to major improvements in the reliability and efficiency of the grid. The NASPI Work Group, an informal organization of the people concerned with NASPI, has been meeting two or three times a year since 2006. This organization has been developing standards and interoperability guidelines needed to meet the NASPI goals.

NOVA: Protecting Against a 'Cyber Pearl Harbor'

PBS NOVA host David Pogue and a film crew visited USC ISI to learn more about cyber security and the DETER Project. As a result of this visit, PBS NOVA is now hosting a featurette about the DETER Project on their web site as part of their ongoing web presence, complimenting their television series Making Stuff Safer.

I had the opportunity to discuss with David the current threat environment and how DeterLab contributes to improving Cyber Security through experimental science of cyber security.
