Genevieve Bartlett, DETER researcher, presented recent advances in testbed support for experiment design and lifecycle at the 11th USENIX Workshop on Cyber Security Experimentation and Test (CSET ’18) on August 13, 2018 in Baltimore, Maryland. Genevieve, along with colleagues Jelena Mirkovic and Jim Blythe, are motivated to enable easier experiment design, management, sharing, and reuse. Current testbed experiments are often ad-hoc, manual, complex, and hard to repeat and reuse.

This summer DETER was used to teach and demonstrate cybersecurity in action to middle school and high school aged students, primarily comprising of 7th through 9th graders, at the GenCyber Camp hosted at University of Wisconsin Green Bay (UWGB). The 5-day cybersecurity camp that took place during July 31 through August 4 benefited both students and teachers. Student attendees typically have minimal exposure to computer programming and systems security.

DETER’s Alefiya Hussain presented on CPS domain-specific specializations and her work on evaluating the security and resiliency of CPS infrastructure at the first Mini-Workshop on Cyber-Physical Systems Security and Privacy, held at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering Center for Cyber-Physical Systems and the Internet of Things, on May 2, 2017. Over the past decade, there has become a great interest in developing novel cyber-physical systems and analyzing them with respect to security.

DETER researcher Jim Blythe recently gave an invited talk on DASH (DETER Agents for Simulating Humans) to the University at Buffalo's Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering. Jim also met with Assistant Professor Matthew L. Bolton and members of his Formal Human Systems Laboratory (FHSL) to explore potential collaboration on computational representations of human mental models for cybersecurity.

Goran Scuric, DETER Partner Manager, recently traveled to Singapore to assist the National Cybersecurity R&D Laboratories (NCL) Team with preparing for their official launch, for the National Research Foundation of Singapore (NRF), that took place on February 21, 2017. The NRF funds NCL (since November 2015) and is the equivalent of the NSF (National Science Foundation) in the United States.

The DHS DETER Project and IMPACT – Information Marketplace for Policy and Analysis of Cyber-risk & Trust – both provide information and resources for systems evaluation. We are working towards integrating these two platforms to enable seamless experimentation of large scale and complex systems on DETERLab using one or more data sets from IMPACT.

Terry Benzel and Goran Scuric – DETER PI and DETER Partner Manager – traveled to Singapore in early November to work with International DETER Partners at the Singapore National Cyber Lab (NCL) being developed by the National University of Singapore (NUS), under sponsorship of the Singapore National Research Foundation (NRF). The NCL is based on the DETERLab cyber security testbed.

Dr. Alefiya Hussain hosted a panel on Engineering Ethics at the USC Center for Interdisciplinary Decisions and Ethics (DECIDE) on October 28th. The panel was part of the Fall symposium on Next Generation Ethics and addressed some of the engineering ethical dilemmas we face today or will face in the near future with advances in various technologies in the area of cyber physical systems and the Internet of Things.

During the summer, Dr. Alefiya Hussain hosted seven high school students from Chadwick School to do a five-week internship at USC Information Sciences Institute (ISI). The internship focused on leveraging the experimentation tools in DETERLab to model and evaluate the process of making the Chadwick campus an energy sustainable environment.

In a blog posted on 26 May by editor in chief Kathy Pretz in IEEE Roundup, two experts in cybersecurity discuss ways to boost the number of women engineers. To give some perspective, females comprised only 11% of the 2013 information security work populace. According to the largest organization certifying cyberprofessionals, that percentage has now dropped to 10%. The field of information security desperately needs more specialists, in general, so this modest drop is of concern to the experts.

CREATE, Cyber Research, Experiment and Test Environment, is now operational and it is run by the Israel Inter-University Computation Center (IUCC) at their cyber unit. CREATE is the result of a strategic partnership between the DETER Project, the Israel National Cyber Bureau (INCB), and IUCC. It is a localized version, also referred to as a cluster, of the USC Information Sciences Institute’s (ISI) DETERLab cyber experimentation facility that runs DETER Core.

National Science Foundation and Department of Homeland Security organized a series of joint workshops on Cybersecurity and Privacy with the Brazilian Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology. The first workshop was held December 3rd thru 4th in Brasilia, Brazil. There were approximately twenty US researchers, primarily from academia, and an equal number of Brazilian researchers from a variety of Brazilian universities and industry.

I participated in the National Cyber Security Research Agenda (NCSRA) Symposium at The Hague, Netherlands on November 2, 2015. The symposium was for those interested or involved in cybersecurity research, development, innovation, and education. It offered a podium for concrete projects, either recently completed or in progress, for which two subsequent editions of the NCSRA acted as the framework.

The NASPI (North American SynchroPhasor Initiative) working group brings together power engineers and other people from electric utilities, from power equipment vendors, and from academia. NASPI's objective is to improve the reliability, throughput, efficiency, and economics of the electric power grid by accelerating the widespread deployment of devices called PMUs (Phasor Measurement Units). A PMU makes fine-grained time-synchronized measurements of the electrical state of a particular point on the grid.

This past week I had the pleasure of presenting at CNERT 2015: "Computer and Networking Experimental Research using Testbeds", which was held in conjunction with ICDCS: "International Conference on Distributed Computing Systems". Sponsored by NSF-GENI, CNERT's aim is to advance experimental research and testbed technologies. Presenters spoke about technologies utilizing a wide range of testbeds including GENI, DeterLab, Emulab, and FIRE federated testbeds.

This week I presented the first Cypress paper at TridentCom 2015 in Vancouver, BC. TridentCom is an international conference that brings together technical experts and researchers from academia, industry, and government to present work concerning research infrastructure and testbeds for advanced networking, cloud computing, cyber physical systems, and connected vehicles.

USC Information Sciences Institute (ISI) hosted a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) sponsored half-day National Conversation on future R&D plans – for both DHS S&T and across the entire federal R&D community – on June 4, 2015. Many experts responded to the call to contribute their ideas and unique perspectives on how to best develop the Trusted Cyber Future in this coordinated in-person meeting.
