USC Information Sciences Institute, Google, & Microsoft Research Sponsor GREPSEC 2 – An NSF and CRA-W/CDC Supported Workshop for Women & Underrepresented Groups interested in Computer Security Research

The second GREPSEC workshop was recently held in San Jose, California, May 16-17, at The Sainte Claire Hotel. The event was very successful and included forty students from thirty universities. The day-and-a-half workshop preceded the annual IEEE S&P (Security and Privacy) Symposium.

I will be attending the upcoming IEEE Women in Engineering International Leadership Conference (WIE-ILC), to be held April 23-25, in San Jose, California. There are two events in conjunction with the WIE-ILC specific to Cybersecurity. The first is an “Innovations in Cybersecurity” panel. I am one of three women leaders participating in the panel that will provide expertise, perspective, and discussion on current cybersecurity strategies.

This week NIST held a workshop on Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) testbeds. While the development of CPS testbeds is still in the early stages, this workshop was presented as an opportunity to bring a diverse spectrum of the CPS and testbed communities together, to talk about key capabilities that CPS testbeds should have and the design principles that make them possible.

I had the opportunity to participate in the Wall Street Journal CIO Network Conference. Leading technology and information executives convened for this third annual meeting in San Diego, California on February 2-3, 2015. These leading CIOs and CTOs came together to discuss and debate key action items to spur better decision-making, greater technology, and innovation in corporations. I was invited to participate as a subject matter expert in the area of cybersecurity and was assigned to the breakout session on "The National Agenda".

I find that working with CIOs and industry leaders provides a valuable perspective on hard problems and helps ground our research. I had some very interesting and informative discussions with CIOs from organizations ranging from a global consulting company to technologists from cybersecurity start-up companies.

Keynote speakers included:

• J. Craig Venter, Ph.D.
  Co-founder, Executive Chairman and CEO
  Human Longevity, Inc.

• John T. Chambers
  Chairman and CEO
  Cisco

• Maarten Sierhuis, Ph.D.
Director, Nissan Research Center Silicon Valley
  Nissan North America

• Howard A. Schmidt, Ph.D.
  Co-Founder, Ridge-Schmidt Cyber, LLC
Cybersecurity Coordinator and Special Assistant to President Obama (2009-2012)
Cybersecurity Advisor to President Bush (2001-2003)

As previously announced in early July, we now have an enhancement to our DETER federation daemon, fedd, which is version 4.10. This release includes a new desktop federator VM image based on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, a more portable version of the python topdl library, and a workaround for a command line parsing bug in recent versions of ssh. It is interoperable with older versions of fedd, so users are only required to upgrade if they have difficulties with recent ssh installations.

The topdl library and VM image can be installed independently.

The DETER Research Group is pleased to announce a new release of the DETER federation system (Version 4.00), fedd. Federation allows a researcher to construct experiments that span testbeds by dynamically acquiring resources from other testbeds and configuring them into a single experiment. As closely as possible, that experiment will mimic a single DeterLab experiment.

A researcher may build a federated experiment to:

I am here in Washington D.C. preparing for the Smart America Challenge Expo.  Our team - the Smart Energy Cyber-Physical Systems – will be demonstrating an integrated federated cyber physical testbed for experimentation and analysis for improving efficiency and resiliency, as well as protecting the crucial resource from potential terrorist attacks.

I attended the 20th NASPI Working Group meeting in Knoxville, TN on March 11-12, 2014. The NASPI Working Group is a voluntary organization of electric power engineers, technical managers in power-related corporations, vendors of products supporting power transmission, and academics in the power field.

Several key members of the DETER Project team – myself (Terry Benzel), Steve Schwab, and Ted Faber – traveled to Israel to work with the Israeli National Cyber Bureau (INCB) under a bi-lateral agreement between the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the INCB. Additionally, we took with us two DeterLab 'power users' from our DETER community – Sandy Clark, University of Pennsylvania and Ryan Goodfellow, Washington State University – to be a part of this exciting opportunity. DHS was represented by Dr.

NASPI (North American SynchroPhasor Initiative) has been funding a large-scale deployment and application of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) in the electric power grid. This relatively small advance in technology is expected to lead to major improvements in the reliability and efficiency of the grid. The NASPI Work Group, an informal organization of the people concerned with NASPI, has been meeting two or three times a year since 2006. This organization has been developing standards and interoperability guidelines needed to meet the NASPI goals.

PBS NOVA host David Pogue and a film crew visited USC ISI to learn more about cyber security and the DETER Project. As a result of this visit, PBS NOVA is now hosting a featurette about the DETER Project on their web site as part of their ongoing web presence, complimenting their television series Making Stuff Safer.

I had the opportunity to discuss with David the current threat environment and how DeterLab contributes to improving Cyber Security through experimental science of cyber security.

The paper “Replay of Malicious Traffic in Network Testbeds” (by Alefiya Hussain, Yuri Pradkin, and John Heidemann) will appear in the 13th IEEE Conference on Technologies for Homeland Security (HST) in Waltham, Mass. in Nov. 2013.

From the paper’s abstract:

I had the opportunity to participate in the DHS S&T Cyber Security Division Principal Investigators' Meeting in Washington D.C., September 16th thru 18th. The meeting had over 200 attendees, including researchers working in a wide range of research topics: Digital Provenance, Software Assurance, Security Metrics, Identity Management, Insider Threat, Cyber Forensics, Usable Security, and Network Mapping & Measurement.

On Monday, August 5, our ISI offices and DeterLab facility were turned into a TV filming facility. Gemini Productions – Gail Willumsen and Jill Shinefield - producers, Jason Longo - cameraman, and Ken King - soundman – turned the 11th floor conference room into a film studio with all of their equipment. David Pogue provided the interview and on-air narration.

Networking testbeds provide a predictable and repeatable environment where an experimenter has full control over the underlying nodes.

Friday, June 28, 2013 - 14:31

I participated in the Cyber Security Research Alliance (CSRA) and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) two-day workshop in early April, “Designed-in Cybersecurity for Cyber-Physical Systems”, which explored emerging research needs for cybersecurity in cyber-physical systems within the diverse cyber-physical community.

On February 20-21, 2013, I attended the Working Group meeting of NASPI  (the North American SynchroPhasor Initiative) in Huntington Beach, California. This Working Group includes several hundred EEs and a few computer scientists, working towards standardization and deployment of instrumentation for monitoring and control of electric power transmission grids around the world. The goal is a significant increase in reliability and efficiency of high voltage transmission.
