I will be attending the upcoming IEEE Women in Engineering International Leadership Conference (WIE-ILC), to be held April 23-25, in San Jose, California. There are two events in conjunction with the WIE-ILC specific to Cybersecurity. The first is an “Innovations in Cybersecurity” panel. I am one of three women leaders participating in the panel that will provide expertise, perspective, and discussion on current cybersecurity strategies. Our discussion will range in topic from new approaches to modeling experimentation, technical innovation, and the impact of organizational culture. Specifically, I will speak to the importance of innovation in the field of ‘experimental cybersecurity’ describing fundamental new approaches to information sharing and technical advances in research infrastructure. As the field of experimental cybersecurity research grows, it is clear that many fundamental advances – along with new approaches to information sharing and new advanced research infrastructure – are going to be required in order to provide significant results. One of the greatest challenges to innovation, in the development of experimental research infrastructure, is the tendency to build what you need rather than what you ‘will need’, in advance.

The second event is a Hackathon, co-hosted with the Cisco Women in Science and Engineering Group, providing up to 50 participants the opportunity to develop code and compete for a variety of prizes.
