Research Community

DETERLab has fostered an open, expanding research community that gathers cybersecurity scientists and organizations worldwide. These experimenters use DETERLab and then provide input back to the DETER Project, helping us create new tools and features. In fact, the first wave of research users of DETERLab made significant contributions to its initial set of tools.

The numerous publications by the DETERLab community indicate the variety and scope of its members and the research they have produced.

Collaboration

Collaboration with other research infrastructure projects is a key part of the DETER Project mission, allowing us to improve the DETERLab facility for our experimenter community, and to develop new scientific experimentation techniques. Since its inception, the DETER research community has expanded and matured in scope, breadth and depth:
  • Over 316 projects spanning 40 countries and 202 locations have used DETERLab for their scientific work.
  • Across these projects, over 860 research team members have used DETERLab.
  • Over 270 papers have been published by DETERLab researchers, on topics ranging from malware analysis to botnets to smartgrid security analysis.
  • Educational use has included over 157 classes and 9,890 students who have used DETERLab for hands-on learning about cyber-security technology.
  • Our range of cybersecurity scientific work now covers several areas that include not only core cybersecurity areas – such as DDoS defense, intrusion detection, and network defense for critical infrastructure control systems – but also new or cross-disciplinary research areas such as control-plane network security, provenance of network trace datasets, anonymity network robustness, and routing security and multicast security for smart power grids.
